I’ve been playing a lot lately and have been using the NEW FLIGHT PLAN on beach landing scenarios. From my experience, playing Omaha Beach and Utah Beach with the NEW FLIGHT PLAN expansion, has not been a good idea. I can attest that it has not been much fun to combine aeroplanes with Omaha and Utah, especially if you are playing the Allies. It’s not much fun from the Axis side either --at least for me- as it became just too easy and the challenge was no longer there. My German bombers were constantly dropping bombs on static ground units trying to land, and as the Allies, a bit ridiculous.
We’ve been playing all three maps individually, but will soon tackle all 3 maps together as one battle. Will not be using NEW FLIGHT PLAN on Omaha, nor Utah, but we’re gunna let the birds fly on the 13th turn on the American Airborne map. It’s just a home rule.
Both my opponents and I are of the opinion that the aeroplanes destroy any hope and chances for the Allies on beach landing scenarios. It’s just too easy to mow the Allied units on the water.
It was no fun at all, at least in my experience. However, the NEW FLIGHT PLAN expansion was loads of fun just a few yards west of Utah on the American Airborne map. The difference, you might ask… there are no beach landings. When you are attempting to land on the beach, Landing Craft and Amphibious Sherman and all, 90% of your units form a cluster with very little mobility. This is a prime target for the aeroplanes in Memoir '44 --or how I affectionately call them, “Flying Tiger Tanks”.
Conclusion:
NEW FLIGHT PLAN IS A NO GO FOR BEACH LANDINGS, BUT THEY WORK JUST FINE ON THE AMERICAN AIRBORNE MAP.
Wait for our next report where we will use three (3) NEW FLIGHT PLAN expansions, on three (3) Breakthrough maps put together to create a supersized overlord or what I call TRIPLE BREAKTHROUGH using three (3) BREAKTHROUGH DECKS.
It looks like the consent is that we’ll keep the Air Combat cards in the box when we play Beach Landing scenarios.
