[Normandy] Green Devils at Vierville - June 07, 1944

Historical Background:
The US paratroopers of the 501st PIR (101st Airborne Division) liberated Vierville on June 6. The next day, at 1000 hours, the Green Devils (German paratroopers of the 1st Battalion/6.Fallschirmjäger Regiment) counterattacked from Basse-Addeville and the marshes of Carentan. The US troops were well entrenched in the castle and houses of Vierville and offered a strong resistance. The Green Devils suffered heavy losses in the pastures around the castle and eventually withdrew to the marshes but then, surrounded and outnumbered by the American paratroopers, they were forced to surrender.

My first m44 game after a long brake was interesting.
I started with axis while my opponent started with allies. Axis started many attack but they were driven back by allies lucky dice rolls and their bombers. Suddenly the axis found themselves led with 5-2 and the victory seemed to be my opponent’s. But then axis lunched a counteroffensive and, because allied were leaking of good cards, they managed to tie the score 5-5. Allies tied then to win a medal but they had no good cards and after their turn axis played a close assault which finished off a unit and brought the victory to the axis side in the first game.

After the first game we switched sides and the we began the second game. Axis had no hope from the first turns because they lost a fighter-bomber and many units. When they were led with 5-0 they manged to launch a counterattack and they scored one medal but allies ultimately won with the score of 6-1.

Conclusion: A pretty hard scenario for axis because the allies have air superiority and axis can be bombed from he first turns. But with a good strategy and some luck they can obtain a very good position.
