Konrad II overlord

Second scenario about the attempts of relief of Budapest by the germans in 1945

Konrad II (6th-11th january 1945)

Historical context:

After the mixed results of Konrad I, a new attempt was launched under the code name Konrad II. This plan, which was in fact an extension of the first operation, reorganised forces and redistributed available resources.

In the south, orders were given to continue the attack on the Soviet lines around Bicske. Meanwhile, in the north, a new breakthrough was to be made from Esztergom, the starting point for the new attack. This was entrusted to Kampfgruppe Philipp, which was tasked with advancing along the only passable road in the region, which ran along the Danube.

At the same time, Kampfgruppe Westland was to attempt to break through directly across the mountainous terrain, which was difficult to navigate. The rest of the IV SS Panzer Corps remained mobilised to maintain pressure on the rest of the front.

Operation Konrad II was still aimed at liberating the encircled city of Budapest.

Victory conditions:

  • 13 medals

  • Apply the ‘Exit’ rule for German players (any German unit leaving the board through the exit hexes earns a victory medal).

Special rules:

  • When attacked in close combat, an artillery unit suffers one loss for each Star symbol obtained, in addition to the Grenade symbols.

  • The winter combat rules from the Winter Wars expansion are optional but recommended to reflect the actual weather conditions of the operation.

As for the first one, I didn’t have the occasion to test the balance of the game. I wish the balance is around 60-40 in favor of the soviets, doable for the germans but things can quickly turn bad. I’m open to your feedback if you want to test it by yourself one day.
