Defense of Spycker

Historical Background:
The village of Spycker is situated in a land corridor between the canal of Mordyck and the canal of Haute-Colme. This corridor was a direct entry in the defensive perimeter of Dunkirk. In late May 1940, Spycker was held by the 1st Battalion of 225th Infantry Regiment (68th French Infantry Division). Under the command of Major Noailles, the battalion was entrenched on the outskirts of the village and in the farm Lelieur at the crossroads of Broukerque and Grande Synthe. Arriving from Broukerque and Afgand castle, the Germans attacked on May 30 and were pushed back with heavy losses. During three days, the French infantrymen of the 225th resisted to continuous bombings of the Luftwaffe, artillery shelling and several attacks from infantry and tanks. On June 2, after a heavy artillery shelling, the Germans finally captured Spycker. In the night of 3-4, the remaining French infantrymen withdrew to Dunkirk in order to embark. But it was too late: all the boats had left. They were the sacrificed troops of Dunkirk.
The stage is set, the battle lines are drawn, and you are in command. The rest is history.

The First scenario from New Flight Plan and my first scenario with the new air rules was a great experience. For the first game I began with axis while my opponent took allies. Axis started some attacks in their left but a French fighter held on until it remained out of ammo but it scored 2 medals and allied infantry scored more so the game was 4-3. But axis lunched some attack and ,with air support, captured the church. Allies tried to recapture the church but they couldn’t and they lost the game at the score of 6-3.

    Church is taken:

For the second game we changed sides and began the battle. Axis fired from distance and with their airplanes and, with great dice rolls, forced an allied fighter to withdraw off the battlefield and scored 2 medals. Allies tried to eliminate axis units but without air support they couldn’t do anything. Axis soon advanced their armor close to the church but they withdrew soon. The decisive moment came when an allied bomber lunched a carpet bombing and reduced 3 axis units down to one figure. Axis desperately tried to destroy the aircraft but an allied lucky Their Finest Hour Scored 2 medals. Axis then eliminated 2 more units with a bomber and won the game much closer this time, 6-4.

Conclusion: A good scenario. The French are affected by German’s superior air power and I think that more than a half of the French units are destroyed by axis planes.
