Battle of Pico (NFP)

Historical Background:
After the battle of the Garigliano and the French advance in the Aurunci Mountains, the Gustav line was broken and German units had to withdraw. The time had come for the French armored cavalry units which supported the advance of the 3rd DIA to move forward : the 7th RCA, the 4th RSM and the 3rd RSAR. Arriving near the village of Pico, the French armor had to face a local counter-attack by the 26 Panzer Division. After a long day of hard fighting, the French tank-destroyers, supported by General Clark’s US planes, killed several German tanks and stopped the counter-attack. The French Corps could finally continue its advance toward Rome.

Setup Photo:

In the first game I played as axis and my opponent played as allies. Axis started with an Assault in center and, using air support, destroyed allies’ mobile artillery. Allies tried to stop the attack with their tanks but there was no sense. Axis, next turn, forced the allied tanks to pull back and destroyed one of them.

Next turn allies counterattacked the axis armor units and reduced one of them down to 1 figure but they lose one tank destroyer unit thanks to an axis well-timed Ambush. Axis then captured the mountain and drove back and enemy counterattack in the area. But then allies armor scored 2 medals and took some strong positions. Axis then played Behind Enemy Lines and finnaly won the game at the score of 6-2.

At the beginning of the second game we changed sides and started the battle. Axis attacked allies in center but they lost 3 units due to allies tank destroyers and allies fighters that helped with spotting and they used boom and zoom tactics to eliminate armor units. It seemed that allies will win the game because they needed only one medal and they surrounded an axis elite armor unit. But even with the help of some fighter-bombers they could just reduce it down to one figure. Axis then gave an order to that unit and they scored two medals having enormous luck. Allies played Recon in center but they couldn’t destroy the last axis armor unit. After those actions axis attacked the mountain and took it and eliminated one allied infantry unit but their end was inevitable and an allied Attack in their right forced the Germans to pull back from the mountain. Next turn axis tried to retook the mountain but it was well defended by allied one-figure infantry unit and they couldn’t retook it. Next turn allies played a Move Out and won the game even if an ambush from axis side scored one more medal for their side.

Conclusion: a really good scenario.
